Encountering God Bible Study Chapter 3

Hey Sparkles! Happy Wednesday! Today’s Wednesday Wisdom post is the next chapter in Encountering God: A Study in Psalms by Steve Pettit.

Encountering God – Psalm 15 – How to Worship God

We are created for worship. The most natural thing for a man to do is to devote his heart, passion, dreams, and energies to something or someone. Take away worship, and life has no meaning. Worship is intertwined with what it means to be human. If we refuse to worship God, we resort to worshipping some kind of idol. Romans 1:21-23 shows this best:

“For though they knew God, they did not glorify him as God or show gratitude. Instead, their thinking became worthless, and their senseless hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man, birds, four-footed animals, and reptiles.”

Worship is not optional! The greatest calling for believers is to worship God. So let us look at how we can worship God.

Who Can Worship God?

Psalm 15:1

“Lord, who can dwell in your tent? Who can live on your holy mountain?”

The message of the scripture is that there is only one who is worthy – Jesus Christ! This is seen in Revelation 5:12.

“Worthy is the Lamb who was slaughtered to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing!”

What are the Qualifications to Worship God?

Through Christ, we gain access to a righteous God, but this does not preclude the necessity of righteous living to worship God.

Right Conduct

Psalm 15:2

‘The one who lives blamelessly, practices righteousness, and acknowledges the truth in his heart.”

Right Conversation

Psalm 15:3

“Who does not slander with his tongue, who does not harm his friend or discredit his neighbor.”

The word devil means slanderer. Satan spoke three times that are recorded in the Bible, and each one was slandering.

Right Commitments

Psalm 15:4

“Who despises the one rejected by the Lord but honors those who fear the Lord , who keeps his word whatever the cost.”

True worshippers must choose to worship with those who fear the Lord. Those who are morally defiled and corrupt are to be rejected.

Psalm 15:5a

“Who does not lend his silver at interest or take a bribe against the innocent”

Nothing reveals the nature of the heart more than our use of money.

Psalm 15:5b

“The one who does these things will never be shaken.”

If we heed the spiritual conditions for worship, we will never be shaken. We will stand firm.
