Hairspray Movie Review

Hey Sparkles!  Happy Friday! For today’s Family Friday blog post, I am writing a movie review of Hairspray (2007).

Recently, I watched the movie, and I was inspired by the message of the “different” people being accepted by the mainstream. Tracy Turnblad is an overweight teenage girl, who longs to sing and dance on her favorite show, “The Corny Collins Show.” She auditions for a part and gets in, but her troubles are far from over.

She makes friends with the Negroes and loves their groove. Soon after, the evil manager of the show cancels Negro Day on the show, and Tracy and her boyfriend Link are forced to choose between their careers and their friends. Link chooses his career and Tracy chooses her friends and the two sadly part. After hearing that Tracy attacked a police officer at the march and that there is a city-wide manhunt for her, Link regrets leaving her and wants her back.

After the show-stopping number “You Can’t Stop the Beat,” the good guys win and the manager gets fired. Finally, the television station gets integrated and every day is Negro Day.

While the numbers are bubbly and groovy, I found myself drawn to the deeper message of love, acceptance, and self-worth, something every teenage girl needs. I watched the movie transfixed, absorbing every part of it. Even the copious amounts of Ultra Clutch Hairspray in the air can’t stop the beat.

Prejudice will never win, and progress can’t be stopped. Hairspray encompassed all that and more.

Well, that’s all I’ve got for today, Sparkles! Do you have any movies you think I should watch? If so, let me know in the comments section below. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have an amazingly beautiful soundtrack to memorize. Thanks for reading, and Sparkles away!!!
